Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Determine job requirements
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • Identify job requirements from specifications
       
Element: Prepare to cut assembly gemstones
  • Select materials suitable for cutting as a gemstone assembly based on market requirements and characteristics of the stone
  • Determine best colour and mark that side
  • Check for flaws with a powerful light source and correct if necessary
       
Element: Flatten gemstone and base
  • Flatten gemstone on marked side until surface is suitable grinding or sawing equipment
  • Select backing materials and flatten in accordance with job requirements
  • Lap gemstone and base until flat satin finish is achieved
  • Clean and dry gemstone and base sufficient for further processing
       
Element: Adhere components together
  • Choose adhesive and mix in line with manufacturers’ instructions
  • Ensure stone is cemented with the best colour face down
  • Adhere flattened surfaces together eliminating excess adhesive and air bubbles
  • Allow adhesive to harden following manufacturers’ instructions
  • Grind stone to expose join between gemstone and backing
  • Grind stone to expose best colour
  • Grind to rough shape to meet job requirements

Assessment Tasks
